Emilio Sáenz-Francés is Professor of History and International Relations at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, where he has taught since 2009 and served as Head of the Department of International Relations from 2016 to 2025. He also directs the Winston Churchill Observatory at the same university, which focuses on analyzing the relations between Spain and the United Kingdom.
He holds a PhD in History from the University of Deusto (Bilbao), where he was awarded the highest honors (Matrícula de Honor) and the European Doctorate distinction. In June 2008, his doctoral thesis received the Humanities Research Award from the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain. He also completed the Master’s Degree in Journalism jointly offered by Vocento and the University of the Basque Country in 2002, as well as the LX Curso Monográfico de Defensa Nacional organised by the Centro Superior de Estudios de la Defensa Nacional (CESEDEN).
Sáenz-Francés has been a member of the European doctoral research excellence network CLIOHRES (2005–2009), a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for the Study of the Two World Wars at the University of Edinburgh (2009), and a Visiting Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge (2014 and 2017).
He has published extensively in both Spanish and international journals and academic volumes, with a primary focus on Spanish foreign policy during the Second World War and, in particular, Spanish–British relations. He collaborates regularly with various media outlets.
